We recently submitted a request to the CAA to adjust our ACP timeline, moving the Stage 3 Consult/Engage gateway to May next year. We wanted to take this opportunity to explain the reason for this change and what it means.
As part of our Masterplan vision for 2040, we have set out how we will support future growth to around 15 million passengers per year. This includes a number of potential infrastructure improvements at the airport, including an extension to the runway. These changes would enable a wider range of aircraft to operate and could allow for more destinations to be served in the future.
Although these infrastructure proposals sit outside the formal ACP process, to make sure we present clear and consistent information, we have been working closely with the CAA to align our airspace proposals with the airport’s longer-term growth plans.
Following these discussions, it has been agreed that we will include the proposed runway extension within the design options presented at Stage 3. We are now updating the designs and supporting material to reflect this, which is the main reason for adjusting the timeline. This includes making targeted refinements to departure routes and arrival transitions so that they remain aligned with the proposed extended runway. These updates are being made within the established design envelope rather than introducing fundamentally new design options. Should the runway extension not be taken forward, the design options would revert to align with the existing runway configuration.
We would like to reassure you that this change in timeline does not alter our overall approach or commitments. Our designs will continue to be guided by the principles agreed at Stage 1 and will take full account of the feedback received during Stage 2 engagement. As always, safety, operational performance, and compliance with policy remain our top priorities.
There is no change to our intention to carry out a full public consultation. Subject to successfully completing the Stage 3 gateway in May, we are currently planning to consult in Autumn 2027.
Thank you for your continued interest and engagement with this process.
